WELCOME FRESHMEN The Clarion HELLO SOPHOMORES Volume XXV BREVARD COLLEGE, OCTOBER 11, 1957 Number I Dr. John Bennett Is New College Dean Convocation Set At The College October 17-18 ‘Sunny” Whisnant Is Now Editor, The Clarion We are fortunate in having as ed itor of the Clarion a very capable and intelligent girl from Polkville, North Carolina, Sondra (Sunny) Whisnant. Sunny has participated in most of the usual clubs in high school and held responsible posi tions in many of them. She was :a member of the glee club and band, newspaper staff, student council, and F. H. A. She was also county winner in many 4-H projects. Sun ny was president of her local MYF and of the senior class in high school. Although active in these many organizations, Sunny main tained a high scholastic record which won for her the coveted honors of chief marshal and vale dictorian. Since Sunny has been at Bre vard, she has been on the annual staff, a member of the Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Pi Alpha, and a Big Sister. Sunny enjoys reading and listen ing to a good variety of music. She has an unusual sense of humor which makes her a favorite among tlio.se who know her well. She is v^ry much interested in journalism and has high hopes as well as con crete plans for the Clarion. Good luck, Miss Editor. October 17-18 marks the date of the convocation on Christian High er Education to be held at Brevard College. Dr. Wilson Weldon, Conference Chairman on Christian Higher Ed ucation, will open the convocation on Thursday evening at 7:00 with an address selected for students and faculty — “The Christian Mind”. Continuing the program. Dr. Hollis Eden, president of Duke University, will speak at 10:30 Fri day morning on “Education and Religion”. Although the regular 8 and 9 o’clock classes will be held on Friday morning, classes through noon on Friday will te cancelled in order for students to attend the morriing service. At 2:00 Friday afternoon there I will be a movie, “Campus Parish”, I shown in the auditorium. All stu dents are invited to see the film. ! There will be a tea for the guests j in the parlor of Annabel Jones I Hall at 3 o’clock on Friday after- I noon. j The Western North Carolina Bi- I shop, Bishoip Harmon, will speak ; at 4 o’clock on “The Methodist ' Church and Higher Education”. Bi- : shop Harmon has spent thirty- eight years in service in the Meth- ' odist Church. ! In accordance with the program ] 01 the Methodist Church for the j dedication of its church colleges, the concluding worship service will be one of rededication for Brevard College administration, faculty, and students. Dr. Kenneth Good- son, pastor of First Methodist Church in Charlotte, will deliver the final inspirational service. The devotionals during the con vocation will be led by Rev. Charles Bowles, minister of West Market Street Methodist church, Greens boro, and Mrs. Clarence C. Cran ford, Sr., Conference president of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service. As this program is planned for the benefit of students, President j McLarty is very desirous that all ' students take advantage of this sig- , nificant occasion and attend all services. JOHN BENNETT Enrollment Is Now 407 Students At The College As an item of interest, the en rollment of Brevard College has been commented on as much as the weather. There is a total of 407 stu dents enrolled at Brevard College. They are grouped as follows: 315 academic students and 92 special students. Of the 113 returning boarding students, there are 67 men, 46 women, and 23 day stu dents, six of which are women. The resident freshman boys outnumber the freshman girls two to one, with 9i men and 60 women students. Ev en the new students almost follow ed the same percentage with 18 men to 10 women. Although the dormitories are not filled to capacity, the college pol icy is emphasizing select students as their main concern. Masquers Sponsor Show The Masquers will sponsor the first talent show of the year on Sat urday, October 19, at 8:00 in the main auditorium. Persons desiring to participate are asked to contact Clara Pruett, Benny Martin, and—or Mr. McFad- den. The date of audition will ap pear on the bulletin board in Dun ham Hall. Wide Experience Is Noted In Varied Background. Ac. live In Many Fields Brevard College is privileged to have this year Dr. John Bennett of Greenville, North Carolina, serv ing as Dean of the College. Mr. Bennett has been associate professor of Bible and Ethics and cc-ordinator of religious activities at Eastern Carolina Teachers Col lege at Greenville since 1954. From 1948 to 1954 he was head of the department of Religion aad philosophy at Mount Union College and from 1945 to 1948 he headed the department of Religion at Oli vet College. For three years prior to that time he was associate pro^ fessor of religion and philosophy at Emory and Henry College, and he was instructor in Bible and Reli gious Education at Brevard Col lege from 1936 to 1939. He receiv ed his PhD. from Duke in 1942. Dean Bennett has held offices in Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs, as well as Parent-Teachers Associa tion's. He was a former trustee of Stark County (Ohio) Mental Health center and is currently the college representative on a committee working with Pitt County Mental Health center. Mr. Bennett is a lay speaker in the Methodist Church and is iffi great demand as speaker to civic and cultural groups. On behalf of the student body, we the members of the Clariom staff welcome Dean and Mrs. Ben nett and family to Brevard Col lege. Lyceum Program Given For The School Year The Lyceum program this year has a big treat in store for all of us. The schedule is as follows: November 22, 1957—Don Cos- sach Chorus. February 11, 1958 — Dr. Robert Baker. March 3, 1958 — Players Incor porated in a production of “Romeo and Juliet”. May 1, 1958 — Nelson and Neal. The Don Cossach Chorus is a world renowned white Russian Men’s chorus and dancers. They were organized in 1927 in Prague. Under the direction of Nicholas Kostruhoff; they made their first debut in Vienna in 1927. In 1938 they made their Canada debnt Their first appearance in the Uni ted States was in San Francisco in 1939, in Carnegie Hall in 1940. Their program will include Litur gical music and folk songs, Cossach nielodies, battle songs and dances. Dr. Robert Baker is a well known organ virtuoso. He was born in Pontiac, Illinois, attended Illio- ois Wesleyan University, and grad uated in i931 with a B. M. degree. He did post graduate work at Un ion Theological Seminary, where he acquired his M. S. degree in Sacred Music in 1944. Nelson and Ner' are America's, most popular h iband and wife duo piano team. They met and mar ried in Philadelphia where both were studying at the famed Curtis Institute of Music. All programs will be presented! in the new auditorium in the CamDus Center Building except Dr. Baker, which will be presented in the Brevard Methodist Church now under construction.
